The Tesla Model Y sunroof-officially referred to as the "Panoramic Glass Roof" or "Glass Canopy"-integrates materials science, structural engineering, and intelligent control technologies into its manufacturing process, characterized by a highly integrated and safety-oriented design.
The Tesla Model Y sunroof employs a "double-layer tempered glass + PVB interlayer" sandwich structure. This design incorporates nano-coating and electrochromic technologies, and is fabricated through a process involving high-temperature, high-pressure fusion combined with precision optical coating techniques, thereby balancing safety, thermal insulation, and intelligent control capabilities.
Tempered Glass Pre-treatment: Both the inner and outer glass layers are composed of high-strength float glass. These layers undergo a high-temperature quenching process-exceeding 700°C-to form a tempered structure, significantly enhancing their impact resistance.
PVB Interlayer Lamination: A layer of Polyvinyl Butyral (PVB) film, approximately 0.38 mm thick, is sandwiched between the two glass layers. Under a vacuum environment, these layers are fused together using high temperatures (130°C) and high pressure (1.2 MPa) to eliminate air bubbles and ensure a robust bond.
Structural Advantages: This manufacturing process endows the sunroof with "shatter-resistant" and "anti-splinter" properties; even if the glass were to break, the fragments would remain adhered to the PVB film, thereby preventing secondary injuries.
